Sandbags

In Suffolk, the county, district and borough councils have taken expert advice and agreed not to provide sandbags to protect individual properties as:

• They will not protect an individual property against flooding. Water can get into a house through doorways, utility access points and through sewerage systems and can make the situation worse as they can become contaminated with sewerage.
• Sandbags are really only helpful to divert surface water on roads from ditches. Houses or businesses need proper flood defence fittings.

• Response agencies use the limited sandbags resources available in an emergency by developing them in bulk to raise/repair existing flood defences or to divert water away from groups of properties.

If you wish to purchase/make up your own sandbags, Hessian bags can be purchased at 33p per bag from Pryce and Co Trinity Rd, Lowestoft NR32 1XJ and sand can be purchased from Ridgeons builders merchants Cooke Road, South Lowestoft Ind. Estate, Lowestoft NR33 7NA at 338 plus vat per bulk bag or PW Waters Unit 6, Harbour Road Industrial Estate, Culton Road, Lowestoft NR32 3LZ at £58.41 including vat per bulk bag.
